What I’m reading
Updated April 16, 2019
The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky (translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky). Update: ok I finished it and yes it’s that good. This book I think is in my all time top 3. It’s incredible.
Deceit, Desire and the Novel: Self and Other in Literary Structure by Rene Girard. One of these days I’m going to write a whole post introducing people to Girard, but if you’ve read my newsletter over the past year you’ll know that I’ve been reading a lot of his stuff and it’s had a pretty strong influence on my thinking. This particular book is Girard walking the reader through the work of three great novelists (Proust, Stendhal and Dostoevsky), and having it as a companion reading beside The Brothers was a good decision.
